Initial Ideas
For my FMP, I want to create a documentary. The style of the documentary will be an interview which means that I will be asking questions to three young adults. I will be asking the interviewees questions about how they have/are coping with the Lockdown and Pandemic due to Coronavirus. The reason why I have decided to have the theme be about Lockdown/Pandemic is because it is very relevant at the moment and I think it will be interesting to find out how people feel about it all and how they are dealing with it mentally. So that I don't loose my audience interest, I will make my documentary about seven minutes long because I don't want them to get bored watching the documentary. As I am interviewing young adults and my target audience is teenagers/young adults, I want my documentary to be stylish and trendy as that's what people of them ages enjoy to watch. To do this I thought I could include short clips/pictures of the interviewees from before the pandemic started and then during Lockdown and include bold text for the title. I will also edit it so that I (the interviewer) is not seen or heard in the documentary to make the audience feel more connected to the interviewees.
I found inspiration from Stacey Dooley who is a journalist/presenter that has made documentaries since 2008. I've always enjoyed watching her documentaries because she travels the world to find out how other people live their lives' which can be so different to mine. Dooley asks personal and fragile questions to her interviewees which allows the audience to really get to know the people which is what I want to do in my documentary as mine is about mental health.
Dooley works with the BBC and has never made a documentary with any other broadcaster services. The BBC has created hundreds of documentaries with many different journalists, with all different themes. This allowed me to discover different types of documentaries which has made me decide which styles and themes I like in which I want to use in my own documentary.
To make my documentary the best it can be, I need to work on my camera angle skills. I am already confident with operating a camera but I want to explore in working with different camera angles so that its more interesting to watch especially with my audience being teenagers/young adults. Plus I will film short clips of the interviewees of them just walking or on their phone to break it up a bit so the camera angles for this have got to be spot on. I found this website: 15 Essential Camera Shots, Angles and Movements (wolfcrow.com) which will help me to remember all the different camera angles and then I will use them while filming the documentary to see which angles works best for each clip.
